The Ghettos consisted of Jews who were rounded up and forced to live in horrendous conditions. There were many ghettos, but one of the largest ones was the Warsaw Ghetto. The Warsaw Ghetto accounted for 335,000 deaths which was a huge portion of the city's population. The Ghettos weren't nearly big enough to fit all the Jews into such a cramped and nasty place.
Life in the ghettos was unbearable. Overcrowding was a huge problem. Apartments designed to hold single families were crammed with multiple families. Food was scarce, and the Germans carefully controlled the amount of bread, potatoes and fat allowed for purchase by the Jewish people. Smuggling of food was not uncommon, but it was dangerous. During the winter there was a lack of heating fuel ans well as warm clothes. Children became orphaned, having to fend for themselves. There was no sanitation whatsoever, and that allowed for disease to spread like fire. The Jews received little to no food, and that caused over 75,000 deaths from disease and starvation. The ghettos were run by Jewish councils who required to follow orders or they would be put to death. So they complied as best as they could in order to save their own lives. In the end, escaping was almost impossible. Besides all of this, the Jewish people continued on with their religious beliefs and practices even if it meant death in the end. Most stayed very faithful.

The ghettos forced many Jews to go into hiding in fear that they would be chosen to be put to death or even beaten. When the Nazis found Jews in hiding they would usually be punished by death in the gas chambers. It was usually children who were in hiding because it was much easier for them to get away with it because they didn't have to have any form of an identification number

Many Jews wanted to resist punishment but it was so hard for them because of the mental and physical state that they were in. They would've have been malnourished, dehydrated, and very weak, subjected to all kinds of psychological issues. So they wouldn't have the strength or determination to follow through with their plan. When they did resist it was usually when they were about to be moved so in order to move them the Nazis tricked them into thinking they were being upgraded to a nicer place when they were really getting moved to their death.
